janet metson urman

Janet and her firm, Metson Urman Architecture, specialize in the design of custom residences throughout Southern California.  Her architectural philosophy is based on the belief that a project should reflect the site's unique characteristics, work within existing conditions and budgets, and follow the client's “wish list” and long-term goals.  On top of those values, she overlays an  architect’s understanding of qualities such as proportions and scale, spatial relationships, natural light and views, and material choices. Every project should function well, leaving clients with a memorable, inspiring home.

Over her career, Janet has acquired a reputation as a well-respected and knowledgeable professional who collaborates well. Her clients value her years of experience and meticulous approach to every project detail. Each project has a team of consultants and craftspeople specifically chosen to fit the project’s needs.

Janet is known as a good listener with the skills to untangle complex problems. She is involved with each phase of the project, from schematic design to construction. Janet’s ability to produce beautiful work has brought repeat commissions from long-term clients and new projects through word-of-mouth referrals. Her work has appeared in various magazines and television programs.

Janet grew up in an artistic home. At an early age, she built dollhouses out of empty shoe boxes. She went on to design the dolls’ furniture, clothes, and accessories, imagining complete lifestyles. She now works on a larger scale, but her love for creating something purposeful and distinctive still guides her work today.
