The original 1920s Spanish-style estate located in the flats of Beverly Hills had not been updated or maintained for several decades. The residence’s new design included a 1,800-square-foot addition containing a large family room/kitchen and a new dining room, plus reconfiguring the layout of the entire first floor. The second story has a primary suite and two more ensuite bedrooms. The existing two-story accessory structure was demolished and replaced with a new 1,400 sq. ft. building containing a three-car garage and pool house. Between the residence and pool house is the extensive, remodeled backyard containing a new pool with spa and water feature, a large outdoor terrace, a variety of gardens, and a large area for the clients’ two Bernese Mountain dogs to play. The exterior design of the structures maintains the traditional Spanish style, while the interiors have a comfortable and relaxed “resort” sensibility. The project has drought-tolerant planting, a PV solar system, and the latest electronic smart home technology.  Many design strategies allow the clients to age in place, including reducing level changes throughout the house and designing bathrooms for accessibility.
